Ian McKellen Biography & Wiki

Ian McKellen's family encouraged his passion for the theater from an early age. His father and grandfather are preachers and young Ian bathes in an environment deeply rooted in the Christian religion.

However, his family practices a religion devoid of any dogmatic consideration by erecting belief as a system of values. It is this tolerance and this family kindness that allows Ian to live his homosexuality in a healthy way without lying to those close to him.

The comedian made his debut on the stage while studying at Cambridge. In 1961, he landed his first professional role in the play A man for all seasons (A man for eternity). In 1965, Ian joined the National Theater Company by Laurence Olivier. This passion for the theater earned him the greatest rewards in this field.

From boards to the big screen, there is only one step, which McKellen takes in 1969 with A touch of love by Waris Hussein. In parallel, the actor continues to play in the theater, in particular for the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company with which he presents "Romeo and Juliet", "Macbeth" and "Othello".

These roles propel the Briton to the rank of the greatest actors of the moment and open wide the doors of the seventh art. He was subsequently found in many films including The Black Fortress (1983), Zina (1985), Walter, and June(1986). But it was in 1988 with Scandal, directed by Michael Caton-Jones, that his film career took a decisive turn.

The actor, who had previously proven himself on the boards of Broadway by playing Salieri in the play "Amadeus" in 1980 (a role which earned him a Tony Award), embarked on an American career. In addition, in 1990, the actor was ordained Knight of the Order of the British Empire and thus became Sir Ian McKellen.

In the 90s, Ian appeared in many American productions such as Six Degrees of Separation by Fred Schepisi (1993), seizes a scythe to camp Death in Last Action Hero by John McTiernanalongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, shoots for Russell Mulcahy in The Shadow where he replaces Alec Baldwin, dons the crown of Richard III for Richard Loncraine in 1996 and stars in the historical drama Bent (1997) by Sean Mathias alongside Clive Owen, Jude Law, and Rachel Weisz.

This film deals with homosexuality during the Second World War, a theme dear to Ian McKellen. In 1998, the Briton began the second part of a career which was enriched with outstanding roles. The player slips into the skin of the former SS officer Kurt Dussander in the thriller from Bryan Singer, Apt Pupil, delivering an agonizing performance and unanimously welcomed.

The same year, the actor shoots the biopic Ni Dieux Ni Démons by Bill Condon. McKellen plays the director James Whale and discusses his relationship with his gardener Clayton Boone, played by Brendan Fraser. This role earned him an Oscar nomination.

With growing notoriety, Ian McKellen obtains a role that will propel him to the rank of the world-famous star. His second collaboration with Bryan Singer thus gives him the role of Magneto in the adaptation of the X-Men comic in 2000. The Briton manages to give depth and a remarkable coldness to the character and makes him a particularly striking "villain". The success of the film is phenomenal and generates two sequels, X-Men 2 in 2003 and X-Men the final confrontation in 2006.

McKellen naturally resumes his role of the devilish Magneto, a mutant who can manipulate metal as he pleases. But it's another trilogy from the 2000s that definitely propels McKellen into the pantheon of today's greatest actors.

Peter Jackson hired him in 2001 to lend his features to the magician Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-2003), an adaptation of the novels by JRR Tolkien. The saga becomes one of the greatest critical and commercial successes in the history of cinema. The actor achieved ultimate recognition in 2008 by being crowned Companion of Honor by the British crown: the highest distinction existing in England, a sort of the equivalent of the French Legion of Honor.

Note that Ian McKellen also passed close to another successful saga, Harry Potter. Indeed, he was tipped to camp Albus Dumbledore following the death of Richard Harris before Michael Gambondoes do not inherit the role. In the second part of the 2000s, the actor is rarer in the cinema.

However, it turns into Da Vinci Code in 2006, an adaptation of the successful novel by Dan Brown. Subsequently, he is content to lend his voice for films such as Souris City (2006), At the crossroads of worlds: the golden compass (2007), or the short film E'gad, Zombies! (2010), once again treading the stage by playing "King Lear" (2007) and "Waiting for Godot" (2009) with his mutant accomplice Patrick Stewart.

In 2009, McKellen made a television foray by filming with Jim Caviezel in the seriesThe Prisoner, the remake of the eponymous series with Patrick McGoohan. Peter Jackson called on him again in 2012 to wear the magician Gandalf's hat again in a new trilogy based on The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien.
