Jack Nicholson Life & Career

Abandoned by his father, Jack Nicholson was raised by his grandmother in New Jersey. At 17, he left for Los Angeles and worked as an office worker at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). He made his film debut as a juvenile delinquent in The Cry Baby Killer, a thriller produced by Roger Corman.

In 1968, he began his collaboration with Bob Rafelson with whom he wrote and produced Head, a wacky comedy starring pop group The Monkeys. They worked together six times, notably for Five Easy Pieces, which earned Nicholson his first Oscar nomination for best actor. But, it was the following year that he acquired his star status with his role as a hallucinated lawyer in Easy Rider.

During the 70s, Jack Nicholson entered the list of actors who matter in Hollywood by interpreting complex and often extravagant characters. The role of private detective in the film noir Roman Polanski, Chinatown earned him his third Oscar nomination for best actor.

But that's a year later with his interpretation of mentally ill in inFlight over a cuckoo's nest by Milos Forman as he wins his first statuette. The same year, he toured Europe with Michelangelo Antonioni in Profession: reporter, his only experience outside the United States.

In 1980, he impresses in Shining of Stanley Kubrick, with a cult role of the psychotic writer. He then tackled a decade of enormous critical success like the epic drama Reds, and the family drama Tendres Passions (Oscar for best actor in a supporting role) with Shirley McLaine.

In 1990, become an icon, he played the Joker in Batman, a role that allows him to use his famous eyebrow set. With a percentage on derivative products, the film brings him $ 60 million! He can then make a film that is close to his heart, the continuation of Chinatown, Two Jakes, in which he resumes his role of private.

The film was, however, a commercial and critical failure. He rebounds, however, with his much-noticed role as a haughty colonel in Men of Honor, eclipsing stars Tom Cruise and Demi Moore. During the 90s, he became more and more rare but his performances are still as much noticed, in particular as a desperate father in Crossing Guard and as a crazy president in Mars Attacks!.

But this is the romantic comedy of James L. Brooks, As Good as It Gets, in which he plays a novelist manic transformed by the love of a woman, which is the return to the front of the stage, earning him his second Oscar for Best Actor.

In 2002, after he noticed policing role viellissant in The Pledge of Sean Penn, 11 Oscar nominations (including three wins), and no real hollow career, he starred in the dramatic comedy, About Schmidt and Self control alongside Adam Sandler. In 2006, he starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in The Departed by Martin Scorsese and delivers a memorable performance for the occasion as a terrifying mafia boss.

Naturally becoming rarer on the screens, Jack Nicholson joins Morgan Freeman in Without further ado by Rob Reiner where they camp two characters thirsty to live despite their 70 years, then take part in the romantic comedy How to know by playing Paul's father Rudd.
