John Travolta Biography & Wiki

John Travolta, born February 18, 1954, in Englewood, New Jersey, is the son of an Italian-born merchant, Salvatore, and an Irish-born English teacher, Helen Cecilia. He is the most youthful of a group of 6 kids.

At 16, the teenager carried on the family tradition - his mother was an actress and singer before she converted to teaching - and abandoned his studies to devote himself to comedy. Fan of tap dancing, he dreams of music hall and Broadway.

It was on television that he made his debut in the series Welcome Back, Kotter in 1975. The following year, Brian De Palma gave him a chance by giving him a small role in the cinema in Carrie au bal du diable.

In the middle of the disco period, it was with John Badham's Saturday Night Fever in 1977 that the consecration came at just 23 years old. His hips on a soundtrack signed by the Bee Gees earned him an Oscar nomination for best actor.

Then the big-screen adaptation of the musical Grease in 1978, alongside Olivia Newton-John, brought her worldwide fame. After a successful start to his career, John Travolta experienced a sudden fall with repeated commercial failures.

After ten years of crossing the desert, he attempted a comeback in 1989 with the family comedy Hello mom, here baby! Amy Heckerling alongside Kirstie Alley. But this professional improvement is short-lived, the two sequels, Look Who's Talking Too (1990), Look Who's Talking Now (1993) have met with mixed success.

The actor owes his true cinematographic renaissance to Quentin Tarantino. In 1994, the young director, who has the wind in his sails, shoots his second film, Pulp Fiction, with Samuel L. Jackson and Bruce Willis.

Despite the producers' reluctance to hire an actor who has become outdated, Quentin Tarantino persuades them otherwise and offers John Travolta the role of gangster Vincent Vega. The film screened at the Cannes Film Festival wins the Palme d'Or and the actor receives an Oscar nomination for the best actor ; his comeback in Hollywood is this time acquired.

His filmography has continued to grow since, the actor turns under the direction of many directors, John Woo (Broken Arrow, Volte-face), Costa-Gavras (Mad City), Terrence Malick (The Red Line). In 2003, the actor found Samuel L. Jackson in Basic.

He starred again in a musical in 2007, starring in Adam Shankman's Hairspray. He then did it again with action films. In 2014, he starred in Philip Martin's The Forger and is expected in Jackie Earle Haley's Criminal Activities.

John Travolta Life & Career

Coming from a family of actors, he abandoned his studies in high school to get into comedy. He had his first success with the TV series Welcome Back, Kotter (from 1975 to 1979). His role as a relaxed high school student (Vinnie Barbarino), will follow him until the start of his film career in films such as Carrie at the Devil's Ball (1976), Grease (1978), and, in a more serious measure, Saturday Night Fever (1977), in which he rides the disco wave playing the role of dancer/student Tony Manero, which will earn him a first Oscar nomination.

The rest of his career is chaotic and strewn with resounding failures contrasting singularly with his previous successes: Blow out (Brian De Palma, 1981), in which he is Jack, a sound technician with proof of murder, Staying Alive ( 1983), a futile attempt to reconnect with the triumph of Saturday Night's La Fievre, or Second Chance (1983), for which he reunites with his Grease partner, Olivia Newton-John.

He makes a semblance of a comeback thanks to Hello mom here baby, the surprise success of the year 1989, a romantic comedy for which he plays the kind-hearted taxi driver James Ubriaco. His real return (Following Allo mom here baby, Hello Mom it's me again in 1993 is a failure), it does in Pulp Fiction with Quentin Tarantino, where his role as gangster Vincent Vega enables it to obtain another Oscar citation in 1994.

Since then, he has reprised villainous roles several times, notably in action films like Volte-face (1997), and Broken Arrow (1996) by John Woo, or Operation Swordfish, in 2001. He also tackles science fiction inLand, battlefield (2000), while adding a dramatic dimension to its prize list thanks to Phenomene (1996), or Prejudice (1998).

In 2001, he starred in the thriller The Intruder, before going in search of a US Army ranger in John McTiernan's drama Basic (2001). In 2003, he appeared for the first time in a comic adaptation, The Punisher, in which he played Howard Saint, a crooked and sadistic businessman who is the archenemy of the Punisher. In 2004 he played the role of a firefighter captain alongside Joaquin Phoenix

in Fire Trap. Then we find him in Be Cool accompanied by Uma Thurman. And it is with gray hair that he gives the answer to Scarlett Johansson in Love Song in 2006. He then works with Todd Robinson in Lost Hearts where he puts on the raincoat and the hat of Inspector Elmer C.

Robinson launched at the kits of an attractive but deadly couple played by Jared Leto and Salma Hayek. The same year, John Travolta left for a motorcycle road trip (Bande de Sauvage), then made up himself as a woman and pushed the ditty in Hairspray, whose success (once again) relaunches the actor.

After giving voice as a heroic dog from Disney studios ( Volt, star in spite of himself ), he became a hostage-taker in a train in 2009 and led The Attack on metro 123 against Denzel Washington, and under the direction of by Tony Scott.
