Perfectionist, Christian Bale will lose up to 28 kilos to take on the role of a paranoid in The Machinist in 2004. Christian Bale Life & Career

Born in Wales, Bale appears from the age of 8 years in commercials advertising and is 10 years his acting debut, playing theater in The Nerd, alongside Rowan Atkinson. In 1987, he directed his first film, the fantasy tale Mio Min Mio and landed the lead role of the fresco of Steven Spielberg, Empire of the Sun.

His interpretation of a young orphan detained in a Japanese concentration camp earned him unanimous criticism. His career launched, he distinguished himself in a few costume films such as Henry V (1991) by Kenneth Branagh, The Four Girls of Doctor March (1995), Portrait of a Woman (1996) by Jane Campion or the adaptation of the novel The Secret Agent (1997) by Joseph Conrad, before immersing himself in the world of glam rock for the needs of Velvet Goldmine (1998).

Without ever having been to the Actor's Studio, Bale embraces the training doctrine, which wants an actor to physically immerse himself in his character. In the 2000s, he pushed his body to its limits by alternating body-building and severe diets. He inaugurates this method by playing the murderous golden-boy of American Psycho, then loses weight to play Captain Corelli, who leads an Italian garrison during WWII.

He then returned to the sport for two futuristic films: La tête brûlée du Règne du feu (2002) and Equilibrium (2003). But his most impressive performance comes from losing 28 pounds to play The Machinist's worn out, sleepless worker. In 2005, the actor appropriated one of the most coveted roles in Hollywood: that of Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins, by Christopher Nolan.

The start of a trilogy, a hit at the global box office, which will see the birth of The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight in 2008, and Dark Knight Rises in 2012. Between these masked performances, Bale continues to manhandle his body. The proof is his meeting with the end-user Werner Herzog, who hires him for Rescue Dawn. Bale's character is visibly thinner during his journey, and the actor loses nearly 25 pounds throughout the shoot.

Batman isn't the only franchise he's relaunching: he's been called upon to play John Connor in Terminator Renaissance (2009). In a different register, he remains faithful to Christopher Nolan and Todd Haynes, for whom he shoots respectively The Prestige (2006) and I'm Not There(2007).

Appreciating historical films and costumes, we find him bearded with long hair opposite Colin Farrell in The New World (2006) by Terrence Malick and opposite Russell Crowe in the western remake 3:10 for Yuma (2008). Systematically changing his look, it is short and hairless hair that he against Johnny Depp in Public Enemies (2009) by Michael Mann.

After these rather physical roles, Bale again decides to go through the "diet" box, in order to meet all his muscles, and to stick as close as possible to his character in Fighter(2010), an ex-boxer turned trainer and addicted to crack cocaine. Her performance earned her numerous awards, including a Golden Globe and an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

Following this recognition of the profession, he donned the Batman costume one last time for the conclusion of Christopher Nolan's trilogy: The Dark Knight Rises (2012). At the start of 2014, the actor appeared in two films: he tried to avenge his brother  Casey Affleck murdered by  Woody Harrelson in  The Blaze of Wrath by Scott Cooper, and found  David O. Russell via American Bluff, a 5-star cast film for which he weighs 18 kilos.

Decidedly follower of roles where his body is put to the test, Christian Bale then turns under the direction of  Ridley Scott in the peplum  Exodus: Gods And Kings, where he camps neither more nor less than Moses. Bale then stars as Terrence Malick in Knight of Cups before being nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in The Big Short.

The actor then gives the reply to  Oscar Isaac in  The Promise and then finds the filmmaker Scott Cooper for the twilight western Hostiles, taking place in 1892. Christian plays there a legendary captain of the American army who reluctantly agrees to escort a Cheyenne warlord and his family, eager to return to their tribal lands.
